Fall for vintage florals

Posted: 14/05/14 Fall for vintage florals

We’re delighted that our Gabriella armchairs and our footstool were part of a fabulous vintage-style floral room makeover in this month’s Ideal Home. We love the look, so we wanted to share our favourite ways to pretty up your home with gorgeous blooms.

1. Put them centre stage

If you want to create a floral-themed room, don’t be shy and retiring about your motif. Upholstering a footstool in a vintage-style bloom sets the mood for the scheme as it’s a focal point for your seating area.

2. Combine designs

For a modern take on the look, avoid picking a single floral print and repeating it through the room. Instead, enjoy combining different motifs that all have a retro look. Choose patterns with different scale – from big, blowsy blooms to smaller prints.

If your budget doesn’t stretch to bigger pieces, why not have cushions made up in your favourite floral fabrics so you can indulge in a riot of great pattern on your seating, and create a comfortable lived-in atmosphere?

3. Provide a pause

There’s plenty going on in a room full of florals with different patterns and lots of colour. To ensure the room doesn’t cause sensory overload, keep the backdrop fresh and white: we’re talking walls, woodwork, furniture and even perhaps upholstery (if your family’s grown-up enough to avoid mishaps).

4. Go for tradition

To ensure your scheme has a pulled-together look, pick armchairs and sofas with classic lines. Our Gabriella armchairs have elegant detail and can be painted white for a fresh look, or any other of our other paint colours. They can be upholstered in a plain or patterned fabric – whether one of our fabrics or your own. Choose turned legs for footstools and sofas, and curvaceous outlines rather than angular.

5. Add in accessories

Repeat the colours of your vintage florals when you accessorise your scheme. Whether it’s lighting, tableware, artwork or vases, introduce pieces that pick up the pretty, summery shades from the patterns in the scheme.

6. Try a trimming

This style of room is miles away from minimal, so have fun with bobbles, buttons, piping and ribbons throughout the scheme. Think curtains, lampshades, cushions… a trim will add to the vintage, hand-me-down vibe of your room.

7. Treat yourself to the real thing

Treat yourself to some of the real thing to make your room extra special when you’re expecting guests or you just have some time to enjoy your own home at the weekend. Single flowers or a pretty mixed bunch always look great and will give your room a wonderful scent, adding an extra dimension.
