Everyone’s talking hygge, the Danish word that means a cosy atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with friends and family. Sounds right up your street? Here’s how to bring the warm and welcoming hygge atmosphere to your home.
Get the lighting right
For the hygge ambience, think soft lighting. Turn off overhead lights and create a gentle glow using floor and table lamps together with plenty of candles in living spaces (and do stay safe by making sure they’re completely extinguished when you leave the room). For dining areas, pendants overhead that illuminate the table and seating area work well, and a dimmer switch will allow you to get the right level of light for eating without going too bright.
Gather round the dining table
Long, relaxed get-togethers sharing food and drink are part of the hygge spirit, so what are the vital ingredients? A dining table with space for everyone is first on the list. This oak table (above) seats six, but we can make custom sizes so you can seat more or less people. Alternatively, try a round pedestal dining table for intimate get-togethers and a space-efficient outline. Make sure your dining chairs offer maximum comfort, too – upholstered versions or wooden chairs teamed with seat pads will keep everyone comfortable.
Choose a warm colour combination
The perfect cosy ambience comes from the colour palette you use in your interiors. Thinks soft reds, oranges and yellows to nudge the temperature upwards. These shades will work on walls, but the easiest way to add them is through your choice of window treatments, cushions and upholstery. Mix and match the tones for beautiful decorative detail: our fabrics are grouped in colour families – including the cosy orange, yellow and spicy red selection (above) – so you can put them together and be confident they’ll work.
Layer up throws and bedspreads
What else do you need for maximum warmth this autumn? Layer up beds with cosy quilts, bedspreads and eiderdowns (above) for the perfect temperature all night long. Have throws to hand in the living room, too. Ours are made from lambswool for softness and they have just the right warming look folded across sofas and armchairs.
Boost warmth with wood finishes
For the ultimate hygge home, go for plenty of warm wood. Logs near the fireplace (even if yours doesn’t work) or piled up in an alcove or nook have just the right look, or try exposed wooden boards teamed with rugs. Smaller elements such as photo and picture frames can all up the organic quotient. Go for furniture designs featuring natural wood elements as well, such as our oak dining table – perfect for kitchen-diners. Take a look, too, at our oak-topped desk for dedicated home offices or living spaces or the sideboard with oak top for dining areas.
