Filing cabinets and storage buyer’s guide

Filing cabinets and other paperwork storage are an important part of a home. Whether you have a dedicated home office or not, it’s essential to be able to store documents in an organised way so you can lay your hands on them when you need to. Equally vital is that your paperwork doesn’t compromise the look of your rooms. Our filing cabinet and storage options will let you keep documents to hand. We offer filing cabinets as freestanding pieces of furniture as well as modular versions. There are also other solutions for paperwork storage in our collection, including a filing workstation, bookcases, upholstered ottomans with room for hanging files inside, chests, and wall storage and shelving. All of our filing cabinet and storage designs are made to be an elegant part of your home. You can choose a paint colour from our selection – or finish your furniture yourself by ordering it unpainted – or select a fabric you love for our upholstered pieces to ensure your filing furniture complements the room in which it’s located.

Choosing a filing cabinet

How much paperwork you have to store now, and how much you think you might need to add to this in the future are important considerations when it comes to investing in a filing cabinet. Assess your current paperwork, and bear in mind that some records have to be kept for many years before they can be disposed of. Our filing cabinets are designed for foolscap hanging files, and the drawers of our modular 9 drawer filing cabinet, and modular 3 drawer filing cabinet each hold around 25 foolscap files. The drawers have heavy gauge glides and extend out fully, so access to every folder is made easy. Think, too, about whether you want cardholders on the front of drawers so you can label the contents. Ours come in a choice of either brass, which will add a warm note, or contemporary chrome. It can also be useful to include a filing cabinet you can move around as necessary. Our single filing pedestal – which has two drawers – is on castors, so you can wheel it into place by your desk when required.

Options for file storage

Filing cabinets work well when you like to organise all of your filing this way, but you might also want furniture that offers a mixture of storage options. Our filing workstation has two drawers in the bottom that each hold around 20 foolscap files plus top cupboards with adjustable shelves. These can make space for box files and folders, as you may prefer to keep some of your paperwork in order this way. We also offer a drawer unit that allows documents to be kept flat without being piled up in our New Hampshire 10 drawer chest. If you prefer a less formal approach to file storage, you could equally opt for one of our bookcases to stash paperwork. Our recommendation? Keep all your documents in our pretty decorated box files and folders, so you have a pleasing display rather than piles of paper. And if a bookcase isn’t enough, or you want to mix household storage and filing in one room, try designs like our New Hampshire 4-way dresser, or a library wall of storage or modular wall storage.

Add more home office storage

Aside from choosing the right filing cabinets and filing ottomans, there’s plenty more you can introduce to increase office storage. Our printer table has room for the printer itself, but there’s space underneath for supplies of paper and other stationery. You can make more of your desk, too, with a desk gallery with 2 drawers, which has room for the small items that can get scattered and misplaced if they’re loose on a desk top. We also provide shelves for our New Hampshire single pedestal desk. Positioned at the back of the desk, they won’t compromise the work surface, but they mean you can keep files and more to hand over the desk. And if you need instant extra storage, check out our cube with storage, which has room for plenty of files and folders inside.
