Headboards buyer’s guide

Available in a selection of shapes and a fantastic array of fabrics, our headboards add style and comfort to a bed. You can combine your chosen headboard shape with a fabric from our collection to create an individual look for your bedroom. Alternatively, you can go for one of our calico-covered headboards and cover it yourself to put your own stamp on a bedroom design. Our headboards are available for a huge range of bed sizes from 2’6“ singles up to emperor size with all the possibilities in between so you can make the beds in your home comfortable for sitting up and reading, watching a film, or even when you’re being treated to breakfast in bed. A headboard will also turn a bed into a true centrepiece for the room. Whether you choose a tall headboard like our deep buttoned headboard or a lower retro style headboard, for example, the vertical will draw the eye and create a focal point.

Choosing a headboard style

When you’re choosing a headboard think about the style note you want to create. If you’re after a room with a five-star hotel look, a design like our deep buttoned headboard will likely be at the top of your wishlist. We offer a 100cm version for many bed sizes that’ll strike the ultimate luxurious note, and the button details are enduringly chic. For a scheme that celebrates mid-century looks, our retro style headboard is the perfect finishing touch with its fuss-free appeal. As a general rule, you can decide between a headboard with curvaceous lines or square details. Curved designs will up the opulence of a bedroom, and can be elaborate in detail – perfect for a maximalist vibe. A headboard with sharper lines will introduce a smart note to the scheme. Like the idea of a modern take on country style? Our headboard cover with side ties, or the version with side tabs, has simple appeal. 


Details for bed headboards

Both the fabric you choose and the headboard’s shape will influence its overall style, but think about the other detail options, which all contribute to the effect. If you want a classic look, you can opt for a headboard with brass studs. This trim can help put the focus on the headboard’s shape, while the warm, traditional metal has enduring good looks. But if you prefer a more contemporary effect, a headboard with chrome studs will still show off its shape beautifully but with a cooler shine. We also offer a range of headboard shapes with a plain padded border and piping around the inner edge. This plump design can put the emphasis on relaxation and make your bed look extra inviting. You can make the look subtle, or use complementary fabrics for the centre panel, border and inset piping to draw the eye. Buttoned headboards have a look that won’t ever go out of fashion. Pick from the tailored effect of deep buttoning, or the more understated look of shallow buttoning. Of course, with all our headboard designs, the fabric you use can be as subtle or as standout as you want – the upholstery choice is down to you.

Teaming headboards with storage

Combining our headboards with storage in the bedroom is easy. If you want to maximise stash space, opt for our ottoman divan. The base of this bed lifts up via pistons, giving you loads of valuable storage below the mattress. This storage bed can be upholstered in any fabric from our collection, then fitted with the headboard of your choice in a matching, or contrasting, fabric. We also offer our divan with drawers in the base covered in your choice of fabric, which once again can be teamed with a headboard in the same or an alternate fabric to create a stylish room scheme and maximise bedroom storage.
