Valance buyer’s guide

Choose a valance for your divan and you can turn a functional but dull bed into a stylish part of your bedroom scheme and bring the room bang up to date at the same time. The bed is likely to be the most dominant element of any bedroom scheme, so if you leave the original divan base in the fabric it’s supplied with on display, it could really compromise the look of the room. This might be because this element doesn’t co-ordinate with the rest of the scheme, or it could be just plain dull. Cover the divan base with a kick pleated valance, however, and you can enjoy the beautiful drape of fabric in a colourway you love. Our valance can be made for a whole host of different sized divans, and in the fabric you love, so it can transform the whole appearance of the space. Our valance is made with kick pleats on the two bottom corners and straight sides meaning it will sit in place beautifully. You can choose either a lined version, or for the very best fabric drape and fullness, opt for a valance that’s both lined and interlined. Read more

Sizing your bed valance

Our bed valances are tailor made to fit your divan base. The lengths and widths correspond with standard bed sizes while the drop is to your measurement enabling the skirt to fully conceal the divan’s base. Pick from the following bed sizes: narrow single 2’6”: W:76cm L:191cm; single: 3' W:91cm L:191cm; small double: 4' W:120cm L:191cm; double: 4'6" W:137cm L:191cm; king 5’: W:153cm L:200cm; super king 6’: W:183cm L:200cm; emperor 7’: W:213cm L:200cm. You’ll just need to supply the drop measurement so we can create your custom-made design.

Choosing fabric for a valance

You’ll need to consider which fabric you prefer for your custom-made valance, which can be selected from our huge collection from the leading fabric design houses, or may be a fabric you supply to us to use. If you go for the latter option, you’ll need to supply the following fabric quantities based on a plain fabric no less than 137cm wide and with a skirt drop of no more than 38cm: narrow single: 3.5m; single: 4m; small double: 4m; double: 4m; king size: 4.5m; super king: 5m; emperor: 5.5m. If you’re planning to use a patterned fabric and/or need a larger skirt drop, please contact us for fabric amounts. Both plains and patterns can be attractive choices for a kick pleated valance, but if you need advice on whether a particular pattern is suitable, we’re happy to advise: please do get in touch. And while subtle neutral shades are often popular for valances, there’s no reason not to go for a block of more eye-catching colour for your bed.

Valance styles

Our kick pleated valance has a smart and neat finish that makes it ideal for all sorts of bedroom schemes including those with clean contemporary style, boutique hotel influenced rooms, classically comfortable designs and those with mid-century appeal. If your taste is more country, though, you could opt for our gathered valance instead, which will suit rooms with more rustic cottage appeal. Either way, you might like to combine a new valance with beautiful extras for your bed that up the comfort and interest. Think a selection of cushions, and an eiderdown and throws. An upholstered headboard is also the perfect partner to a both a kick pleated or gathered valance.
