Footstools buyer’s guide

A footstool may feel like a touch of luxury, but once you’ve bought one you’ll wonder how you ever managed without. We offer footstools in a range of styles and shapes so they suit every room scheme. Some of our designs have more classic looks, but we also offer contemporary footstools with cleaner lines and sleek leg shapes. When you’re buying, consider first whether you want a footstool with storage inside. Some of our designs have lift-up lids, and they’re perfect for stashing magazines, remote controls and kids’ toys inside. Think, too, about the shape of the footstool. Do you want a rectangular or squarer shape? Overall dimensions are vital as well. Measure the space in front of your sofa or the area in between two facing sofas to see how much room you have, remembering that you’ll need to position the footstool so there’s room for everyone’s feet on the floor in front of a sofa, but the footstool also has to be reachable when you put your feet up. You’ll also need to leave circulation space beyond the footstool. Read more

Choosing footstools with storage

If you’re short of storage in the living room, a storage footstool can be an easy way to pack a lot more into the space – but it won’t reveal its purpose, so the calm uncluttered lines of your room won’t be disturbed. We offer a range of footstools with storage. The contemporary storage footstool comes in four standard sizes, but we can make a custom size for you, too. Get in touch with the measurements you want for a quotation. Our contemporary footstool with storage can be an upholstered version, or upholstered with deep buttons. If you want classic style, opt for the Tulip footstool with storage, which has turned legs on castors. Other storage footstools in our collection include the smart Brunswick and the elegant Warwick with turned tapered legs, and for each you can select one of our four standard sizes or ask us about making a custom size for your room.

Benefits of a living room footstool

A footstool’s not just a way to ensure you can really relax when you’re in the living room. In fact, it’s a worthwhile addition for a host of other reasons. A footstool can take the place of a coffee table, which can make the whole room feel more comfortable as the finish is soft, warm and has gentler lines. All you need to do if you want to use your footstool this way is add a tray to the top to protect the upholstery from cups and glasses. A living room footstool is also a way to add in extra colour or pattern to boost the richness of your decorating scheme. As with all upholstered designs from The Dormy House, the choice of upholstery is all yours and you can find your desired fabric in our huge collection, or send us a fabric you’ve sourced to use. We’ll let you know how much fabric you need to supply. Of course, a footstool can also be a way to bring in extra storage if you opt for a version with space to stash inside.

Finishing touches for your footstool

As well as picking your favourite upholstery fabric to give your footstool the look you love, you can also choose a finish for the legs that gives it individual style. We can supply the legs of the particular footstool design you choose in their original finish, or stained or painted. We’d recommend looking at the other wood finishes in your room when you’re selecting to create a consistent finish across the space, or repeating a paint colour that you’ve used for other painted furniture to give the space a harmonious feel. You should also consider whether you want a plain upholstered top to your footstool or deep buttons. They look equally stylish, with the former having more casual appeal and the deep buttoned version a tailored look.
